Indie Rock

For this post I am going to be looking at the codes and conventions of Indie Rock. 

The genre originates from the UK and the USA from the 00's, Indie rock was a sub genre of alternative rock, starting in the 80's alt rock came around from independent underground music and this slowly became more and more popular and expanded with different styles and this then created more sub genres some bands that helped progress the genre's were, The Smiths, Nirvana and Oasis.

I believe that most Indie rock are represented as band who love music as most of them write all thier own music, not all artists in the charts can say that they do that in most cases indie rock bands just want there music to be heard they are not all out to make as much money as they can they love making music and even more so love to preform it!

Current music videos in indie rock you often seen a narrative portrayed in between shots of live performance of the band by doing this they are showing they are the ones playing not just a computer and its what they love as a band! A good examples of this is are Artic monkeys- You and I, Don Broco Actors, Swim Deep - Honey All three music videos show a simple narrative and shots of the bands performing.

I feel like my video is going to follow close to a video like these as it will have a narrative and proformance shots.

When I am thinking of indie rick bands the bands that come to mind are:

 

The Arctic monkeys:  

 

 

 

The Arctic Monkeys are an indie Rock band formed in England, Sheffield this does have an impact on the band as when Alex Turner is sing we can here his accent and this can portray what the song is trying to put across to the listener, the band formed in 2002 the have released 5 studio albums across there career.

Better The Devil You Know

In Kylies video "Better The Devil You Know" we can see she is represented in a totally different way from what we have previously seen such as "I should be so lucky". We see her as a different person in the way she is dressed and assed to us as an audience.

She is much more exposed and even trying to portray the 'sexy' look when she's dancing in this video. this is because as she is growing older as an artist as is her audience so to put across some eye candy is bad for the young- middle aged audience. In her other videos she has danced but not in this style; it's normally a fully choreographed pieced with both male and female dancers. Whereas in "Better The Devil You Know" she is dancing with men that have there tops off or undone. Kylie is also wearing a lot less that what we are used to seeing with a crop top and skin tight gold shorts.

We can see Kylie is trying to create a new star image, there is one other star that it is clear she is compering herself to Madonna we can see this in Madonna's song 'Like A Payer', although kylies video 'Better The Devil You Know' is not as offensive as  Madonna's video we can see that the way they are dressed is very similar. both in a black dress with very thin straps and they both seem to wear it in a way that the straps fall down this can give a 'sexy' look.

 Born 28 May 1968 she is an Australian singer-songwriter and actress, working and living in London. After beginning her career as a child actress on Australian television, she achieved recognition through her role in the television soap opera Neighbours, before beginning her career as a recording artist in 1987.

1987- I should be so lucky

Released on 29 December 1987 by Mushroom Records and PWL Records, this song became worldwide hit. The music video for "I Should Be So Lucky" was directed by Chris Langman and filmed in November 1987 at Channel 7 Studios in Melbourne, Australia the video features Minogue walking through her home, with scenes of her dancing in front of a colorful chalkboard background. It presented a cute, young "girl-next-door" image of Minogue to the public, with scenes of her giggling and making funny faces to the camera.

One shot kylie is show with a chalk board with the words “I luv you”  the chalk board is also very childlike as it is from this we begin to think it’s a bit odd to see a women in her early 20’s this tells us that the target audience is much lower than us. Also when she is in her night wear we don’t expect to see a 20 year old wearing that and she then get a large picture of a man who appears to be her one love but she does not know him she begin to sing in to picture of the man, who she has no real relation to. However, the audience members that the single is targeted to could relate as that age group would have pictures of their celebrity ‘crush’ next to their beds. With this we could then link the childlike drawings to this target audience.
